The Seasons
A season refers to the period in which football activities take place. Australian rules football commences with a pre-season activity followed by more than twenty-three rounds in different tournaments between teams.
Typically, there are at least eighteen players in a tournament, excluding substitutes that sit out on the bench. The substitutes replace the player when any suffers injury or in case of other necessities.
Each match comprises a 20-minute session and commences with the bounce of a ball by the umpire. In football, the team players tackle the other team’s players for ball possession and aim at the goalkeeper’s post for a score. For a goal, six points are awarded when the ball touches down in between the goal post.
When a season commences, different tournaments are fixed at a different time and in an organised manner. A season can last as long as a month and a half with a scheduled match timetable. Each winning team progresses with increasing points. Also, the season is divided into quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals. Each stage determines a team qualification for the next until the finals, where the finishing eight teams battle themselves for the cup. In the end, only one team emerges as the winner.
How the Australian Football League (AFL) Works?
The League season comprises twenty-three rounds, which runs across the year, usually from winter, March to September. In the first run, the best team is awarded a “minor premiership.” After the semi-finals, the season is concluded with eight teams who play in four rounds as part of the final series.
The best two teams from the four rounds face each other in the Australian football league grand finale, which happens at the popular cricket ground every year. The winning team is awarded the major premiership title cup.
2020 AFL Season
Like most activities, the pandemic affects the season, and for once in centuries, there was no audience cheering up the players in the first round. Subsequently, we suspended the season due to an increasing rate of covid-19 crises and the urgent need to keep the people safe.
On June 11, the season resumed, but we reduced the rounds and the grand finals in Brisbane.
AFL Premiership Season
In Premiership Seasons, points matter and determines a team’s qualification in the first rounds largely. The ratio difference between points scored and those conceded serves as a tiebreaker, and the winner is crowned as “minor premiers.”
AFL Finals
The finishing eight teams battle the cup in the final rounds, usually around September or October. Out of the eight teams, only two teams would qualify for the grand finals, in which one winner would emerge at last. The finals last as long as four weeks and the grand final winner is crowned with receipt of a silver premiership cup at the Cricket ground in Melbourne.
